I first read Sold by Patricia McCormick for my grade 11 English class. I found it to be a very enjoyable yet heartbreaking read. I was originally drawn to this book because I had previously read books by Patricia McCormick and quite liked them. It’s also a shorter read, 263 pages. Which is always good for an English class, or if you’re just looking for a quick read.
Sold is about a thirteen-year-old girl from Nepal whose family urges her to leave home and start working to help support her family. We follow Lakshmi on what starts as her happy journey to India. The story takes a slightly darker twist as Lakshmi discovers her family sold her to be a prostitute and not a maid, as she was originally told.
